While this feature, often found on job portals like LinkedIn, simplifies the application process, HR experts believe it may not always work in favor of job seekers, especially in a competitive market.

The Downside of ‘Easy Apply’

Given the current hiring slowdown across industries, companies are becoming more selective and cost-conscious in their recruitment strategies. Unlike bulk hiring trends of the past, organizations now prioritize project-based recruitment and niche skillsets.

HR professionals argue that ‘Easy Apply’ leads to an overwhelming volume of applications, many of which may not meet the required qualifications. Santosh Nair, COO of CIEL HR, suggests that this method has a lower success rate (30-35%) for mid-to-senior-level roles compared to direct applications through company career pages. Additionally, job seekers who rely on this feature often miss the opportunity to tailor their applications, reducing their chances of standing out.

Why Custom Applications Matter

Industry experts emphasize that candidates who submit applications via company career websites tend to craft more personalized resumes, increasing their chances of getting noticed. Data shows that while 52 million users search for jobs weekly on LinkedIn, over 100 applications are submitted every second, creating fierce competition.

Sandesha Jaitapkar, COO and CHRO at Artha Group, believes that customized applications improve the quality of the applicant pool, making it easier for recruiters to identify the right candidates.

The Challenge for Freshers

The current job market is particularly tough for entry-level job seekers, as companies are prioritizing experienced professionals with specialized skills. The Career Outlook Report by TeamLease EdTech projects only a marginal 3% increase in fresher hiring in the second half of 2023, largely due to intense competition and fewer available roles.

Although ‘Easy Apply’ allows candidates to apply quickly and skip repetitive resume submissions, its limitations outweigh its benefits. Many platforms do not allow editing applications post-submission, which can hinder candidates from showcasing their skills effectively.

Ankit Aggarwal, Founder & CEO of Unstop, suggests that only 50% of candidates applying through Quick Apply have a chance of being shortlisted, as recruiters primarily rely on resumes without additional insights. Some platforms, such as Unstop, offer customization options and video-based assessments, allowing recruiters to gauge applicants’ effort and research.

Alternative Job Platforms for Freshers

Instead of relying solely on ‘Easy Apply,’ fresh graduates can explore specialized job platforms such as Freshersworld.com, GetWork, and HackerEarth, which offer tailored opportunities and skill-based hiring.
